Accreditation
Giving official approval of something. Giving recognition or credit for meeting certain requirements. When it comes to SSL, it refers to a pronouncement by management which approves the system to function within a certain perameter of safeguards.
Accredited Registrar
Also called an Accredited Certification Body. It is accredited by a recognized body for its competence, work results, and management system. It must also meet the certain requirements of a standard in order to be accredited.
Administrative Contact
The person who interacts with the domain registrar on behalf of the registrant. This is usually the person who is purchasing the domain name. When in the cases of larger companies, the name of an individual employee is often the one used.
Adsense (Google)
Google Adsense lets people earn money by posting certain advertisements on their site. It is a pay-per-click advertising program run by Google. The ads are usually ones related to the site they are posted on, this allows you to monetize and enhance your pages, all while earning money based on the revenue.
Adwords (Google)
With Google AdWords you create your own ads, choose keywords to help match your ads to your audience and pay only when someone clicks on your ads. This is the advertiser side of Google Adsense.
Affiliate
When referring to Internet marketing, an affiliate is an independent party that promotes the products or services of a merchant in exchange for a commission. Affiliates can also be termed a partner, an associate or a reseller.
Affiliate Network
An affiliate network is very similar to an ad network. It is the intermediary group that works with publishers on the web and the online merchants. They provide things like banner or text ads, links, etc. so the products can be advertised. Affiliate networks also get a commission pay.
Affiliate Program
An affiliate program is any type of revenue sharing program where a webmaster or web site receives a portion of income for generating leads, traffic, or sales through a graphic or text link to a merchant web site. A potentially lucrative Internet marketing model for both parties.
Algorithm
A procedure or formula for solving a problem. In this industry algorithm is referred to in reference to a search engine's way of indexing and ranking web sites/pages.
Alias
Another name for a URL address. Sites addresses are in a coded form and it is a lot easier to rename them as an alias. An alias is a name that points to or refers to another name.
ALT text - Alternative Text
Alternative text is an HTML term. This is the text that is displayed if someone holds their mouse over a photo, text, graphic, etc. This text is still displayed even if the text or graphic cannot be loaded.
AltaVista
AltaVista is a search engine company that was brought out by Overture. It was later bought by Yahoo. When it was first created, it was one of the main internet search engines. It did an algorithm change that caused it to dump many websites. It is not used as much as it once was.
Anonymous FTP
Anonymous FTP is used to log in to a site without creating a profile. This way, you can get information or files, and transfer them wherever you please. An anonymous FTP gives you access to public information. Usually, anonymous FTPs are signed in as a guest.
AOL - America Online
An internet service provider that originally started as a dial-up internet provider. AOL offers news updates, forums, email, and more.
Appraising
To look over something and then determine its value. In this case, it has to do with determining the value of a domain name.
AskJeeves
Now called Ask.com, AskJeeves is an internet search engine where you enter a question to search for an answer.
Audio Streaming
Obtaining sound access on a web site. Streaming audio uses a large amount of bandwidth, so not every web space provider offers it.
Authority Site
Google ranks page links from an Authority Site higher than others. An authority site is a central site in a community determined by counting inbound and outbound links.
Auto Responder
An automated program that acknowledges receipt of an email message and then sends back a response to the sender of the email letting them know the email was received. Autoresponders are great because they provide feedback with no further action on your part after the initial set up.
